Trivia

Just after the explosion from trying to burn fuel, Mark says,"Interesting sidenote, this is actually how the Jet Propulsion Lab was founded, five guys at Caltech trying to make rocket fuel and they nearly burned down their dorm, and rather than expel them, banished them to a nearby farm and told him to keep working, and then we had a space program." This is not true. Born in 1881 in Budapest, aerodynamicist Theodore Von Karmen joined Caltech in 1929. He secured space at the Caltech campus for a group of engineers conducting rocket experiments on an isolated area called the Arroyo Seco at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains. As the experiments grew more dangerous overtime, Caltech built Theodore a new facility in the foothills of Pasadena across from the Arroyo original test site. Theodore later named this facility the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 1943. Theodore became the first director of JPL but it was director William Pickering who later convinced the government to allow JPL to join NASA arguing the benefits of their recruiting ties to Caltech future talent. JPL was eventually allowed to join NASA primarily because of their success assisting BMA in launching the first US satellite. The first US satellite was successful because of the pooled together resources and knowledge of JPL and the US army's Ballistic Missile Agency. BMA was also merged into NASA after successfully launching the satellite. Behind BMA's success was German aerospace engineer and architect Wernher Von Braun. He was a member of the Nazi party and invented the V-2 rocket, the world's first long-range ballistic missile. Russia and the US raced to capture him near the end of World War II. It was the US that captured him and most of his team. They forgave his war crimes in exchange for his service developing missiles for the US Army. He not only launched the first satellite for the US but developed the Apollo Moon Program as director (From 1960-1970 he was director; NASA was just formed in 1958.) of the newly formed Marshall Space Flight Center (NASA's largest center best known for Saturn Launch Vehicles, The Apollo Moon Program, The Space Shuttle Program and the International Space Station).\

Goofs

In the NASA press room, the American Flag is displayed to the left of the podium, and the NASA flag to the right. This is a violation of the United States Code, 4 U.S.C. § 7(k): ..."the flag of the United States of America should hold...the position of honor at the clergyman's or speaker's right as he faces the audience. Any other flag so displayed should be placed on the left of the clergyman or speaker or to the right of the audience."

Quotes

Mark Watney: I'm the first person to be alone on an entire planet.

The Martian (2015) User Reviews

A Solid Watch!
8 October 2015
Based on Andy Weir's 2011 novel by the same name, 'The Martian' is an Epic Sci-Fi Adventure, that offers solid entertainment. Its a gripping film, about about survival & hope. Legendary Director Sir Ridley Scott & Actors Matt Damon & Jeff Daniels are at their finest!

'The Martian' Synopsis: During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.

'The Martian' is about human willpower. If one has the courage & belief, He/She can conquer any difficulty, even if its beyond planet Earth. Mark Watney (Played by Matt Damon) is a fine, fine protagonist, who's spirit to survive & fight against all odds, makes his unbelievable journey, all the more engrossing. You are with him throughout the turbulence & you never stop rooting for him.

Drew Goddard's Adapted Screenplay is top-notch. Its a challenging, inspiring & throughly entertaining Story, that hardly misses a beat. I was glued to the screen from start to finish. Sir Ridley Scott's Direction is exemplary. 'The Martian' is among his best works, as the Master Storyteller handles the intensity, with precision. Dariusz Wolski's Cinematography is perfect. Pietro Scalia's Editing is razor-crisp, despite a running-time of over 140-minutes! Art & Costume Design are excellent. Graphics & 3D Effects are top-class. Harry Gregson-Williams's Score is soulful.

Performance-Wise: Matt Damon is at his peak here. Emboding Mark Watney from head to toe, he leads the narrative with a forceful performance. He gives us a protagonist, we'd like to remember for a long time. Supporting him superbly back home is Jeff Daniels as Teddy Sanders, head of NASA. He's flawless. Of the rest, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Vincent Kapoor, a NASA mission director, Kristen Wiig as Annie Montrose, NASA spokesperson, Jessica Chastain as Melissa Lewis, Ares III commander, Kate Mara as Beth Johanssen, an astronaut & Sean Bean as Mitch Henderson, a NASA mission director, leave a strong impression.

On the whole, 'The Martian' is a ride that needs to be experienced! Strongly Recommended!
